Boa Constrictor (detail)
Driftwood, seaweed
This work is an exploration of seaweed found at a beach near Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC. I spent hours carefully wrapping the already interesting branch. The strength and creative potential of the kelp and seaweed I used reminded me of working with handmade paper made with plants. I was pleased with the way the seaweed dried and stretched, changed colour from brown to bright green, and formed a sparkling layer of salt on its surface. The green striped form reminded me of a large snake and recalled a story about a young man encountering what he believes to be a snake and upon closer examination discovers it is just a rope. Our sense of reality is often a false illusion.
